The global energy transition has many new, influential leaders providing analysis and solutions for renewable energy and the need for carbon emission reduction.  We hear from IRENA and DNV and their mission to provide meaningful data and guidance around the innovation and technology in the energy transition.  The panel then addresses some of the more practical issues around executing large renewable energy projects on a country-wide and regional level.

Dolf Gielen

Director, Innovation and Technology Centre, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

As Director of the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) since 2011, Dolf Gielen oversees the Agency’s work on advising member countries in the area of technology status and roadmaps, energy planning, cost and markets and innovation policy frameworks.

Before joining IRENA, Mr. Gielen was Chief of the Energy Efficiency and Policy Unit at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Vienna. In that capacity, he managed a number of large projects involving energy efficiency and renewable energy (including those in Sri Lanka, Ukraine and India). Previously, he was a Senior Energy Analyst in the Energy Technology Policy Division of the International Energy Agency, Paris.

Mr. Gielen has a PhD in Energy and Materials Modelling from the Technical University of Delft. He graduated with an MA in Environmental Sciences at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Jose Antonio Millan Ruano

CEO, Hinode Energy

Jose Antonio Millan Ruano is the CEO of Hinode Energy, a solar energy development platform headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

He has worked in renewable energy industry for over 16 years and promoted over projects in 15 countries in that time period.  He holds a Master of Business Administration from MCA Business and Postgraduate School and a MSc in Renewable Energy from the University of Reading. 

Lorenzo Mancini

Regional Sales Director, TotalEnergies Renewables Distributed Generation

Originally from Italy, Lorenzo has lived and worked in Asia for the past 12 years in solar and energy storage applications. In TOTAL SOLAR Distributed Generation he is in charge of C&I solar business development across South-East Asia. Prior to joining TOTAL, he was GM of a Hitachi Chemical group company in Singapore. Lorenzo holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy and full-time MBA from SDA Bocconi, Milan Italy.

Jon Dugstad

Director Wind & Solar, Norwep

Jon has more than 20 years of international investment banking and strategic advisory experience from investment banks such as Handelsbanken and Barclays – advising projects and companies on corporate strategy and financial transactions. Prior to joining INTPOW, he was an advisor to the renewable energy industry on strategy, business development and financing. Jon is educated in Germany as a Diplom-Kaufmann (MBA). Jon works with wind and solar power, and is also responsible for financing and investment.

Sverre Alvik

Director, Energy Transition Outlook, Group Research and Development, DNV

Sverre Alvik is Programme Director for the Energy Transition research programme in DNV GL and Project Director for DNV GL’s Energy Transition Outlook. 

He has a Master’s degree in Naval Architecture from NTNU in Norway from 1997 and more than 20 years’ experience from working in DNV GL. His main experience is with the Energy and the Maritime industry, where he has worked with strategy and politics, marketing and sales, project management and research & innovation, and where he also has written a number of papers and presentations. The last six years he has been heading up DNV GL’s global research work on the energy transition.

Joseph Tomkiewicz (Moderator)

Partner, Tilleke & Gibbins

Joseph is a partner and co-chair of Tilleke & Gibbins’ energy practice. He has over 28 years of managerial, transactional, and litigation experience in the world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas companies. He has lived and worked in Thailand, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Texas, New York, Washington, DC, Louisiana, and Florida, during which time he has served as an officer, director, and general counsel to several affiliated overseas oil and gas companies. He has significant experience working with various forms of petroleum agreements and has also negotiated and realized contracts for some of the largest-ever industrial constructions. Joseph has many years of experience interacting with senior level ministerial and regulatory government officials in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Joseph is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia (1991) and in the State of Louisiana (2001).  He is also admitted in the U.S. District Court (Eastern District of Virginia), U.S. Court of Appeals (Fourth, Fifth, Seventh, and Tenth Circuit), and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
