The energy transition movement has accelerated in Asia, as evidenced in the recording breaking renewables capacity built and growth in LNG import. Asian countries have made commitment for net zero pledges. This panel will review key markets, national strategies in decarbonization, spotlight projects and how oil & gas sector has been integral part of the green power pathways.

Martin Baart

CEO, ecoligo

Martin Baart has more than 14 years of experience in the renewable energy industry with more than 10 years in emerging markets. He started his career with a German regional municipality on grid integration of grid-scale solar PV projects. During his Masters he lived and worked in Australia for the global leader in Microgrids, Powercorp, on the technical integration of solar and wind solutions into Microgrids, mainly for remote communities, mining operations and island utilities. Moving into business development he opened up the European office for Powercorp. After successfully entering the market, he supported the management in its sale of the business to ABB. For ABB he build up the Microgrid business unit in Madrid, after which he left to join Berlin based Start-up OneShore Energy as CTO and first employee. With them he developed the East African markets and technologies suited for the risk minimization of Off-Grid Solar PPA’S. After building up the company, he left in 2015 to prepare for the foundation of ecoligo, addressing the key barrier for solar projects in emerging markets: a fully serviced and financed solution, taking away all worries from the clients. Since then, he led the business into regional hubs in Central America, West Africa and East Africa and introduced the solution also for energy efficiency projects in the markets.

Dr. Wei-nee Chen

VP, New Energy Ventures, Hibiscus Petroleum

Dr Wei-nee began her career in the IT industry which spanned nearly 18 years; more than half of this tenure was in New Zealand and the remaining in Malaysia.

In December 2005, she made a career switch from the IT industry to environmental sustainability by focusing on the sustainable energy sector. She served the Ministry of Energy, Putrajaya for nearly 15 years of which the first 5 years were under a UNDP-GEF project (Malaysia Building Integrated Photovoltaic) and the remaining tenure in the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA).

Dr Wei-nee is a climate change advocator who is passionate about energy transition. Over the years, she has shared in many local and international platforms including the World Government Summit (Dubai), various UN roundtables, IEA workshops, and supported the Asian Development Bank in their Asia Clean Energy Forums.

Although much focus on energy transition has been in the electricity sector in the past decade, and the electricity sector has come a long way in achieving sustainable energy growth in the electricity mix, the O&G sector remains a neglected sector in the energy transition. In Sep 2020, Dr Wei-nee shifted her focus on energy transition for the O&G sector, by accepting the role of VP of New Energy Ventures in Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd.

Dr Wei-nee is a doting mum to her 2 daughters. Aside from advocating for a sustainable environment for future generations, her doctoral thesis was dedicated to increase women participation in top management by understanding how these women developed and managed their personal brand towards achieving career success. Today, she also serves as an advisor to the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation, Malaysian PV Industry Association, and Sunway University's PhD programme.
